Type 316 is a special stainless alloy due to the addition of 2% molybdenum. This increases its resistance to corrosion by salts, acids and seawater. Also called 18-10 due to 18% chromium and 10% nickel. T316 melts at 2500 degrees F (1375 C) but its maximum recommended temperature for continuous service is 1500 degrees F. (815 C) and is useful for intermediate service up to 1650 degrees F (900 C). Its' uses include: processing of oils and foods, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

Stainless Steel Wire Mesh - Cutting
Stainless steel meshes with wire diameters from .001 inch to .010 are easily cut with scissors. The heavier wire diameters from .011 up to about .047 can be cut with tin snips. Wire diameters over .047 inches are difficult to cut with hand tools but a compound aircraft-style hand shear can usually nibble its way through.
Stainless Steel Wire Mesh - Choosing
How do I choose a mesh size?
In general, our website gives detailed descriptions and pictures of many stainless steel meshes.
For someone unfamiliar with wire mesh size terminology, 2 mesh has two wires in each direction in a square inch. You could easily pass a pencil through the openings.
16 mesh has 16 wires in each direction in a square inch. This mesh is used in a window or porch screens to keep out common insects.
60 mesh has 60 wires each direction in a square inch and is the size commonly used in kitchen faucets. An 80 mesh has an opening which will barely pass a human hair.
An idea of how thick the wire is can be estimated using the fact that a piece of paper is about three thousandths (.003) of an inch thick. So, a wire .018 inches thick is equal to 6 sheets of paper. (.018 divided by .003 equals 6). The total thickness of the woven meshes will be about twice the thickness of a single wire. In this case, it would have an overall thickness equal to 12 sheets of paper.

This group of stainless steel wire cloth meshes has openings that range from about the size of a pencil lead (1/16 inch) and downward to the size of a medium human hair (1/125 inch). Even larger welded stainless mesh with openings from 1/4 inch to 4 inches is in stock.
This group of stainless steel wire cloth meshes has openings that range from about the size of a pencil lead (1/16 inch) and downward to the size of a medium human hair (1/125 inch).
- Fine Stainless Wire Cloth
This group of stainless steel wire cloth mesh has openings that range from about the size of a medium human hair (200 microns) and downward to the size of a large bacteria (2 microns) . Some of these are available in non-fraying sintered versions.
Wires joined by resistance-welding (No filler metal used)
Available in basic stainless Type 304 and Marine-Grade Type 316

Strong, consistent welds
- Welded Wire Mesh Type 316
Stainless Steel Welded Type 316 Meshes are constructed from our most corrosion resistant material. Sturdy, strong and stable, these meshes perform in demanding outdoor environments. These have high consumer appeal.
- Welded Wire Mesh Type 304
Stainless Steel Welded Type 304 Meshes are good looking, strong, and highly corrosion resistant. These have high consumer appeal and may be designed into machines and appliances.
Stainless Steel Hex Meshes are useful outdoors and in industrial environments, marine applications, insulation and refractory materials support on boilers, pipes and refinery vessels. They may be used to form corrosion resistant light animal barriers and small scale rock basket (gabions) Popular names include boiler mesh, stainless chicken wire. Special widths, lengths and Type 316 and monel hex meshes are available only with a 25 roll minimum order.
- Stainless Steel Bolting Cloth
Stainless Steel Bolting Cloth is a precisely woven group of meshes which are used for seiving and sifting powders. They have fine wires and smooth surfaces to increase particle throughput.
- Type 316 Stainless Steel Mesh
Type 316 is a special corrosion resistant stainless steel alloy. This expensive strong material exhibits high resistance to corrosion by salts, acids and seawater. It is also called 18-10 stainless steel due to 18% chromium and 10% nickel. Type 316 stainless mesh is used in demanding marine and industrial enviroments and in processing of oils, foods, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.
- Type 304 Stainless Steel Mesh
Stainless steel mesh is the most popular woven screen in the industrial world. Also called 18-8 due to 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Stainless mesh screen and wire cloth is use where clean long lasting vents, filters, or grilles are need .These meshes are used for sorting and screening of abrasives, liquids, powders and other solids. It is the less expensive, stronger, but not as corrosion resistant as Type 304 is the basic stainless alloy, and unless another alloy specified it is assumed that this type is acceptable.

Plain Weave Wire Cloth is the most commonly used and simplest wire cloth weave. Each shute wire is woven alternately over and under the warp wires through the cloth at 90 degree angles. This is a very common weave that can be produced quickly and economically. It has a wide range of applications.
Twilled Weave Wire Cloth is woven by passing each shute wire alternately over and under two warp wires. This type of weave is commercially woven in items ranging from 150-635 mesh however it is also available in course and mid range mesh combinations.
Dutch Weave Wire Cloth is woven with a larger wire diameter in the warp direction and a relatively smaller wire in the shute direction. This weave has great strength and is available in wide range of micron ranges. It is primarily used to filter a wide range of liquid and slurry products.
Twilled Dutch Weave Wire Cloth is a woven product that is capable of very fine filtration. Shute wires are passed alternately over and under two warp wires forming a fine mesh. It has a wide range of filtration applications for gas and liquid applications.
Reverse Dutch Weave Wire Cloth is a very strong woven product. This mesh is ideal for making filter belts, and applications where fine filtration and great strength are required. This mesh is also made in reverse twill dutch and sometimes referred to as PZ and KPZ Mesh.
Five Heddle Weave Wire Cloth provides a rectangular opening. The unique design of this mesh can assist increased drainage and flow properties. This mesh also has a smooth surface on one side.
